Early that morning Law arrived at his department to find a letter from the War Office marked ‘Urgent and Most Private’. Lloyd George’s handwriting was on the envelope. He sat at his desk and hesitated before opening it. He was right to hesitate because his life would never be the same again after reading it. The envelope contained a copy of Asquith’s response to Lloyd George with a simple covering letter which read:
